South Carolina veteran education benefits
Stars rate how much each state offers veterans themselves for college, training and exam fees (family-only programs don't count): 5 = free public-college tuition for most resident veterans, no disability rating needed; 3 = partial grants or narrower eligibility; 1 = little or nothing beyond federal benefits. How we rate
Broad children's waiver; nothing for veterans themselves.
Checked Oct 7, 2026. State benefits change often. Confirm the details with the state agency before you apply.

Tuition Assistance for Certain War Veterans' Children (S.C. Code 59-111-20)
- What it covers
- Free tuition at state-supported colleges, universities and technical schools (any undergraduate degree)
- Who qualifies and limits
- Child aged 26 or under. Veteran served honorably in a wartime period and was KIA or died in service or of service-connected causes, was a POW, is P&T disabled from any cause, received the Medal of Honor, is MIA, or received a Purple Heart. Veteran and student each need 12 months of SC residency, or the child is a lifetime SC resident.
If you left the service 15 to 20 years ago
Nothing for veterans themselves found. The children's waiver covers Purple Heart and P&T from any cause, so it's broader than most.
