Nebraska veteran education benefits
Stars rate how much each state offers veterans themselves for college, training and exam fees (family-only programs don't count): 5 = free public-college tuition for most resident veterans, no disability rating needed; 3 = partial grants or narrower eligibility; 1 = little or nothing beyond federal benefits. How we rate
Strong family waiver for P&T/deceased veterans; nothing for veterans themselves.
Checked Oct 7, 2026. State benefits change often. Confirm the details with the state agency before you apply.
Verify on the official page means we could not fully confirm that detail on the agency's own page.

For spouses and children
Waiver of Tuition (Neb. Rev. Stat. 80-411)
- What it covers
- 100% of tuition, plus fees left after federal grants and state aid, at University of Nebraska campuses, state colleges and community colleges
- Who qualifies and limits
- Spouse, child or stepchild of a veteran who died on active duty or of a service-connected cause, is permanently and totally disabled from service (temporary 100% ratings don't count; permanent IU does), or was MIA/POW. Student must meet Nebraska in-state residency. Children up to age 26 (extension to 31 with own service). Up to one community-college credential and one bachelor's.
If you left the service 15 to 20 years ago
No state tuition benefit for veterans themselves found. The family waiver depends on a permanent and total rating or death, not on when the veteran separated.
